GarryConn.com: Why Do I Blog

  • Matthew Jabs · 2 years ago
    Nice reasons Garry...

You've helped me a few times & I'll always try to do the same!
  • jez · 2 years ago
    Your second point
Making Friends and Meeting New People [..]
is important for me as well. I have meet quite a bunch of people over the internet in the past few years and have also established several business contacts with my readers. I need to hold a dutch presentation next week - no problem if you know dutch people. Fire-up MSN and have them help you. It is all about connections nowadays, I am sure.

I TOTALLY agree with you on #4 Garry!! Some of my best posts were written when I was feeling out of sorts and I just sat down at a blank screen and wrote my way out of the blues! :D
  • Garry Conn · 2 years ago
And after it was all done, you felt better... :) had a good night of sleep and woke up to a brand new day!
  • Homemom3 · 2 years ago
Oooh I just love these tag games. Thanks Garry, this should be a fun one. I'll let ya know when it is up. Oh and you are helping, I have been reading your archives for Jan and plan on switching over to wordpress soon.

Matt at eJabs tagged me when I started our blog couple of months back. I didn't realize the fun I was getting into then but my perspective has changed much with all the learning. May be it's time to do another one and review my thoughts from then and see where I am now and where I would like to go.

You have got me started Garry!
  • Amanda · 2 years ago
You asked me how I got banned, well about 3 years ago I think it was...My friend and I all joined adsensed and clicked eachothers ads. and then I got banned. however its come to bite me in the ass as my site getrs about 40-60 clicks a day on ads that are all CPM

Ouch! I am glad he is doing better. That cream must have been challenging to get into his eyes! The game was fun because it allowed me to open up a little bit. :)

I am sure that you will have fun with it! Drop me a comment with a link when you publish it. :)

I guess Google puts the fear of God in people by how ruthless they can be with a few girls just horsing around. I am sure that if they contacted you first and threaten to ban you, you guys would have taken it more serious. But in the end... you did cheat and broke the rules. And that deserves some kind of consequence. I guess if it was me, I would have to do the same thing... there is so much volume to deal with, and by being very very aggressive with this problem, I keep others from breaking the rules too.

I am sure more people would do everyday, what you did years ago, knowing that they would only get a slap on the wrist. However, pretty much everyone who uses Google Adsense also knows... Don't Click My Own Ads. And if they do, they know that the reaper is coming for their account!

I think that if you really want your Google Adsense account back, you will need to sell yourself and present a case to Google explaining how you feel and understand how bad you messed up.

My second favorite PPC program is Yahoo Publisher. I have an active account with them as well and have their service standing by just is case Google Adsense goes down the tubes.

I would give Yahoo Publisher is try.

Glad to hear that you will be making the switch. I started on Blogger.com also, but discovered how flexible Wordpress is. Are you doing to do your own hosted Wordpress?
  • Homemom3 · 2 years ago
haha, Yes, it is very hard to do this. Heck, I can't even watch those visine commercials. He is very angry for about five minutes, if I pick him up immediately he's just fine. :) Can ya guess which one I do?
  • Homemom3 · 2 years ago
I'm not sure how I'll host it yet. Currently checking out bluehost, but still shopping around.
  • Amanda · 2 years ago
Now although bluehost sounds good remember their prices have to match that of a server, most hosts like bluehost and including them oversell their servers and I've heard a lot of bad reviews because peoples sites hit it offer and get popular then their site lags because bluehost cant handle the amount of traffic going on to it. So becareful.
Aside from the fact I sell webhosting (for about 7 years now) on the side to my clients and occasionally outsiders I know a lot of webhosting company owners and trust me good servers cost 250+ and you can safely put about 200 clients on a server. even at the largest spot. but then there are resellers addon domains, people who use cgi which ruins a server sometimes.

    I sure will Garry!

LOL!! Oh the moments of parenting! I wouldn't have it any other way! I have three kids Savannah (15), Garry III (9), and Jaymie (1). If it was up to me, I would have twenty! I love kids, partly because I am just a big kid myself!

But, when it comes to cuts and scrapes, yes... that is my department, because my wife freaks when things like that happen.

And for that matter, I do to... but something just comes over me and I get this "Get'r Done" power and I don't think much about it. When things happen, I quickly assess the situation, calculate damages, and create an action plan.... all in what, 10 seconds... while my wife jumps up and down freaking out... "Is he gonna be ok!!!" LOL!!!

Poor girl! But 95% percent of the time, I am just a useless bag of potatoes and just a dumb guy in her eyes! Sheesh....
  • Garry Conn · 2 years ago
Amanda is right... I personally pay a pretty penny for hosting. I have a dedicated plan and I can host tons of sites on it if I wanted. I mainly use it for my own sites though.

But, you and start with a basic cheap hosting plan... nothing wrong with that... and when you outgrow what they can do for you, move on!

I would get some kind of Linux Cpanel hosting plan... they are cheap.

Sounds like this is Amanda's expertise! So, continue talking with her about it... I am sure she will get you pointed in the right direction. :)

    @ Amanda,

Thanks for dropping the comment and helping out by contributing your advise! :)

I like the reasons you blog, and I like the idea of being a home dad (even if I have no kids :) Anyway, keep up the great job!
  • Goldy · 2 years ago
I blog because I NEED to work the left side of my brain.
  • Amanda · 2 years ago
Haha it is, I've owned my domain registration company for almost 4 years now, I've been doing webhosting companies for about 5. I've bought and sold many a company :) I'm building up a new one, so I'd be more than happy to help you. Starting with a shared plan is good because you don't know exactly the space you need. for example my hosting company (which is 1 plan away from being sold out and I haven't even premiered yet) the smallest package is 800MB(space) and 25GB(bandwidth) for 9.95/mo or $119/yr if you're paying less for more space then you're on a server which can die at any moment since you dont know whose site is going to have an explosion of traffic, or which site might end up using all the CPU the more sites the more risk that the CPU will over load which causes the server to lag or "down time" to happen. Where the server isn't down its just devoid of life. heh.
  • Thor Schrock · 2 years ago
Ditto Garry. I really appreciate the great comments you leave on my blog. I have met more awesome people in the past year blogging that I have in a long time!
  • Thor Schrock · 2 years ago
Unless of course you wake up to the sound of the Sheriff's Deputy knocking at your door with a C&D... It happened to me :-)
  • Thor Schrock · 2 years ago
Or you could just get a new tax ID number. If you plan on making a good amount of money online, its not a bad idea to establish a LLC or an S Corp.

Another method, although I have not tried this one myself, would be to get an EIN from the IRS.gov wesite. The Employer Identification Number is free, and can function as the legal equivilent to your SSN.

I don't know if G can make the connection between our SSN and your EIN, because that us the purpose of an EIN - to shield your SSN.

Making money online is going to get interesting for bloggers if Google's new anti-paid links algorithm is released They plan on segregating paid links from non-paid links and devaluing them in SERPs.
  • Madhur Kapoor · 2 years ago
Thanks for tagging me Garry , i will compleate my entry by this weekend .

  • Garry Conn · 2 years ago
Very true and with the huge domain name registration business that she has owned for 4 years and even more... I would imagine that she is already incorporated, etc...
  • Garry Conn · 2 years ago
That is interesting to hear, can you jump back in and drop a few references to this?

I instead ended up doing a Top 5 Must Read Blogs. And guess what you are in it! :-)

    Check it out... Click Here!
  • jez · 2 years ago
Garry, eventhough I have commented on this post before, I would like to bring up another question which is basically post unrelated, but since I saw the Google ads on this post, I am going to address it to you here anyway:

How is your experience with those apple-green ads and its color scheme?

I find those ads quite soothing, but yet I would not click them, as they do not talk to me. no "click-me" color, as it looks too much like content.

Btw. the receive a follow-up comment does not work for me on this page. weird, isnt it?
  • Garry Conn · 2 years ago
    Trouble trouble trouble... :)

There is always an issue here and there, isn't there! LOL!

I guess I will have to add that to my To-Do-List. Almost seems like I need a site administrator? But being a jack of all trades is fun too! I will have to look into that.

As far as the Google Adsense goes... to be honest, I haven't even checked my reports. I did after the first few days of running the campaign and it was doing quite well. But, I am running it for 30 days as a test to see if it will be an effective means for making a little money online to supply my kids with some goodies and ice cream at the end of every month...

I don't want the ads interfering with my content. People who read and follow my writing all know what Google Adsense is. There is no use putting it in their face. After people read my articles, these ads are in their line of sight. I am not going to use HOT NEON CLICK ME colors. If the ads interest my readers, they will click... changing the colors, etc isn't going to cause my readers to click any more.

Again, I want my readers attention on me! Not my ads... My goal is to make the minimum $100/month needed to get checks cut monthly and enjoy some family time.

Thanks for your comments though and the feedback. I appreciate it a lot! :)

I am glad that the ads are soothing and almost invisible. I am not desperate for clicks. Google will do their job for me, to create clicks. If they fail, then I fire them! Simple as that. :)

Thanks for tagging me, Garry. I only saw it this morning because I've been offline. My Mom passed away last May 11.

I already wrote on this topic for Manila Mom. However, in my current state I feel like writing on it again. I hope you don't mind if I do so on my other blog, Cafe Romanza. Thanks again!
